Concept developed by Bernardo M. Fernandes in the MST context. 'Territorialization of the land struggle is the process of acquiring the land. Each settlement won is a fraction of territory where the Sem Terra will compose a new community. The settlement becomes their territory. The land struggle leads to territorialization because when a settlement is won perspectives are opened up to winning a new settlement. Each settlement is a fraction of the territory won and we call this set of conquests territorialization. Thus, each settlement the MST wins is territorialized, and it is exactly this that differentiates the MST from other social movements. When the struggle to win the land is over, territorialization no longer exists, which is what happens with the majority of movements that struggle for land. When the landless people organized by the MST win land, they always foresee new conquests, which is why the MST is a socio-territorial movement' (Fernandes, Bernardo Mançano e Stedile, João Pedro. Brava gente: a trajetória do MST e a luta pela terra no Brasil. São Paulo: Editora Fundação Perseu Abramo, 1999, p. 78, n. 5). |
