‘Took place from 29 to 31 January, 1985, in Curitiba, Paraná, with the participation of 1500 rural workers from all over Brazil. The occupation of the land was approved as the main form of struggle to bring about Agrarian Reform in Brazil."Ocupação é a única solução" [Occupation is the only solution] and "Sem Reforma Agrária não haverá Democracia" [Without Agrarian Reform there can be no Democracy] were the by-words of the Conference. The participants corroborated the decisions made at the First National Meeting and launched the symbol of the Sem Terra Movement: a man and a woman, with machete in hand, inside a map of Brazil. The national coordination of the MST was also created at this Conference, with representatives from 16 states’ (Calendário Histórico dos Trabalhadores.
